Make the Airlock Your Last Defensive Layer
Hull Rupture airlock defense works best as a safety net behind the ship's turret network. The September demo rebalance explicitly makes turrets the primary defense and Airlock units the last line against enemies that get through. If every wave arrives at the entrance largely intact, improve the route and firing coverage before assuming more units will solve the whole problem.
That priority comes from the official Hull Rupture demo and combat updates. The developers still describe unit-based defense as viable, but weakened it so that it would not overshadow tower defense.
Give Enemies More Defended Ground to Cross
Alien drop pods land on the upper and lower exterior of the ship. Enemies then travel toward the Airlock, and internal corridors can provide additional routes. Hull shape therefore determines both the distance attackers cover and the positions from which your defenses can engage them.
Before placing another defensive structure, follow the likely path to the entrance:
- Which side of the ship receives the incoming enemies?
- Does the route pass through useful turret coverage?
- Is an internal corridor changing where enemies emerge?
- Are your strongest positions covering only one approach?
The October construction devlog describes bosses landing on the far upper-left part of the hull, away from the Airlock. Extending that journey can create more opportunities to damage them. It does not help much if the new stretch has no effective firing positions.
Avoid blocking the Airlock when placing hull blocks. The documented construction rules prohibit obstructing it or the engine, and placed blocks cannot simply be destroyed afterward.
Choose Turrets for the Route, Then Add Support
Long, open routes suit long-range weapons, including attacks that pass through several enemies. Enclosed spaces and winding corridors can favor strong short-range fire or ricocheting projectiles. Choose positions that let those strengths work before attackers reach the entrance.
Debuffs are another part of the defense. The developer lists effects such as slowing targets, increasing damage received, and poisoning enemies. One documented September interaction lets Beam turrets apply Fragility when the Reproducer has the Eyes modifier.
You do not need every effect on every run. Combine what you can obtain with production that can support it, rather than buying a kit whose construction or upgrades will stall your economy.
Turret relocation is free in direct resource terms in the September update, but takes a long time and causes downtime afterward. Reposition a weak gun when you have room to plan; do not rely on constant moves to cover a boss all the way to the Airlock.
Use Units Without Copying an Outdated Build
Airlock units give surviving enemies another obstacle before they can end the run. In the recorded earlier demo playthrough, the player builds soldiers and later additional unit types while also improving the external turret network. That is player experience from a version with the older shop and shipyard systems, rather than a current mandatory unit composition.
The September notes are important when evaluating older advice. They describe a nerf to unit-based defense, including the Cheat Code artifact, and a stronger focus on turret-related artifacts and modifiers. A successful early unit build does not establish the best approach for the updated demo.
Treat the Airlock as part of the same economy as the rest of the ship. Humans assigned to production, propulsion, or defensive roles compete for availability. Additional defensive spending should answer what got through the outer layer without leaving the production chain unable to support the next wave.
FAQ
Should I defend entirely with Airlock units?
The developers still allow unit-oriented strategies, but the September rebalance makes turrets the intended main defensive layer. Airlock units are the backup for enemies that survive them.
Why do enemies reach the Airlock from different directions?
They can land on both the upper and lower hull, and corridors create extra routes. Check the actual approach instead of assuming one group of turrets covers everything.
Can moving turrets solve a weak defensive side instantly?
No. The documented move system takes time and adds a period of inactivity. Prepare the position before the emergency whenever possible.
Should I follow an old unit composition from a demo video?
Use it as a player example and compare its version with the September changes. The updated balance and the kits your run supplies matter more than copying an earlier lineup exactly.
